Contrary to the hypothesized sequence, boys' acquisition of sex role stereotypes lagged behind by about 1 year rather than preceded their development of sex-typed preferences. The test also shows that the impact of the frequency of contacts with deviant behaviour patterns on the development of positive definitions and on the frequency of communication about relevant techniques is substantial and cannot be ignored by criminologists. The idea that an underlying human irrationality, an idea that has no scientific credibility, survived this ascent is implicit in this perception. The toys provided by parents deliver some of the earliest gender-based messages by encouraging children to engage in activities associated with, for example, dolls and trucks. Thirty-eight infants were presented with animated avatars of macaque facial expressions during the first month of life.
